Usually, these are organizations operated or contracted by county governments to house and care for stray dogs. We can't guarantee that this includes every possible place where your dog could be. You should contact your local authorities to find and check all shelters in your area. Also, many Police Departments will provide temporary housing for stray pets so make sure you contact your local Police. If you live near an Indian Reservation, make sure you contact authorities there. Indian Reservations usually have their own animal control facilities. Visit all shelters in your county as well as those shelter in nearby counties if you live near a border. Also see our Rescue List. Found dogs may be housed at Rescues.
You need to personally visit these shelters. Do not rely on information conveyed over the phone. Make sure you ask about kennels not accessible to the public (injured dogs, bite dogs, etc.). Visit all shelters in your county and in nearby counties if you live near a border.
